Bangladesh Bar Council vice chairman Khandaker Mahbub Hossain on Monday said the people of the country are not safe in the hands of the current ‘illegitimate government’.
“This government has assumed office illegally through holding a farcical election on January 5. So, people are not safe in the hands of this illegal regime,” he said.
Mahbub, also an adviser to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, was addressing a brief rally of lawyers after their demonstration on the Supreme Court premises protesting the murders of seven people, including senior lawyer Chandan Sarker, in Narayanganj.
He alleged the widespread killings, enforced disappearances and abductions are being carried out at government patronage. “The government must shoulder the responsibility for all the killings and abductions in the country.”
Calling upon all to be vocal against the Awami League government, Mahbub said, “The fall of the illegal government is inevitable in the face of a countrywide movement of lawyers.”
SCBA secretary Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khakan alleged that the members of the law enforcing agencies were directly involved in the killings of seven people.
He also said Minister Mofazzel Hosain Chowdhury Maya’s son in-law who is a high official of Rab-11 had a hand in the murders.
Over a hundred lawyers joined the demonstration.
