‘The opposition party has the right to wage movement against the government. But being a part of the government, Ershad cannot do so.’
Referring to Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad, Communications Minister Obaidul Quader yesterday morning said Ershad’s announcement to launch anti-government movement was self-contradictory when his party was a part of the government.
The minister said this at an awareness campaign by Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) in Chittagong to reduce road accidents and bring order to public transport sector in the city’s Agrabad area.
He said: “The opposition party has the right to wage movement against the government. But being a part of the government, Ershad cannot do so.”
The minister also said Ershad should get rid of his “two-faced” mentality.
Ershad, special envoy to the prime minister, said the Sheikh Hasina-led government had failed to rule the country and declared to launch anti-government movement during a meeting with party members at the party office in Banani on Sunday.
While addressing the awareness campaign, Obaidul Quader said coordinated efforts as well as raising awareness were required to bring discipline in mass transport.
He said: “Chittagong has become uninhabitable today. There are heaps of garbage all around the city. There is no discipline in public transport system. The city streets are in dilapidated condition.
“It will take three days to repair the streets of the port city if the responsibility is given to me,” the minister said, urging the authority concerned to work with commitment in this regard.
He ordered BRTA officials to take action against unlicensed motorcycles, CNG-run auto rickshaws and battery-run rickshaws.
During the campaign, the minister also distributed awareness-raising leaflets to the pedestrians and passengers and drivers of public vehicles.
