BNP standing committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah on Wednesday said there is no scope for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to hang on to power on completion of her tenure.

“We want to clearly say Sheikh Hasina will have no scope to continue as the Prime Minister on completion of parliament’s tenure,” he said.

Addressing a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club, Rafiqul came up with the reaction to Awami League presidium member Mohammad Nasim’s remark that the Prime Minister will be there in office on completion of the government’s term if the election is not held.

Swadhinata Forum, a pro-opposition platform, arranged the discussion, titled ‘The role of Khaleda Zia in protecting the independence and democracy’, marking the BNP chief’s 68th birth anniversary.

Leader of the Opposition and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia turns 69 on Thursday.

Rafiqul said the BNP-led 18-party alliance together with people will force the government to arrange the next election under a non-party caretaker government.

“We’ve long been on a movement demanding restoration of the caretaker government. If the government tries to hold the election under its own arrangement ignoring our demand…we won’t participate in the polls. People also won’t accept such polls,” he added.

The BNP leader called upon all to get united to compel the government through a vigorous street movement to hold the next polls under a non-party administration.

He also criticised the government for arresting Odhikar secretary Adilur Rahman Khan. “This arrest was undemocratic and unfair.”

On Saturday night, plainclothes police arrested Adilur Rahman on charge of violating the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act.
