A National Citizen Party (NCP) leader was attacked allegedly by local BNP activists in Fatullah of Narayanganj this evening.
The injured, Taohidul Islam Taohid, is the joint organising secretary of the NCP’s Narayanganj district committee. He received treatment at Narayanganj 300-bed Hospital, said Sonia Akter Lubna, secretary of the Narayanganj NCP’s publicity sub-committee.
The incident took place around 8:00pm in the Baktaboli Bazar area under Baktaboli union.
She said NCP leaders had held an organisational meeting at the house of a local leader in Baktaboli Bazar. District committee convener Zubair Sardar and other local leaders and activists were present at the meeting.
After the meeting, the NCP leaders spoke with local residents in the market. Locals at the time complained to them about alleged illegal soil extraction along the Dhaleshwari riverbank in Baktaboli.
“The NCP leaders protested the soil cutting and spoke about it. Following those remarks, local BNP leaders and activists attacked us with sharp weapons. Our leader Taohidul was seriously injured and his head was split open,” Lubna alleged.
The NCP leaders alleged that Yasin, younger brother of Halim Azad, organising secretary of Baktaboli union BNP, and his followers took part in the attack on the instruction of Halim.
NCP’s local lawmaker for Narayanganj-4, Advocate Abdullah Al Amin, posted on Facebook, condemning the incident saying that there will be a response to this attack if the “BNP criminals involved in the attack are not brought to justice”.
Meanwhile, Baktaboli BNP leader Halim Azad denied the allegation.
“I heard there was an argument and a scuffle between some people and NCP leaders and activists. I also learned that Taohid was injured. But neither I nor anyone from our side was involved in the incident. I do not even know who was involved in the altercation. I am also looking into the matter,” he told The Daily Star over phone.
Shamim Hossain, additional Narayanganj superintendent of police (A Circle), said, “We are looking into the matter. Legal action will be taken after investigation.”
