Nazmul Hassan first elected BCB president

Nazmul Hassan Papon MP emerged as the first elected President of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Saturday.

Nazmul Hassan had been serving as the BCB president since October 17, 2012 as the government appointed him for the post as the successor of AHM Mustafa Kamal who was elected vice-president of ICC.

He was unanimously elected for the hot seat of the country’ s richest sports body in the first meeting of the newly elected Board of Directors at National Sports Council on Saturday.

BCB Director AZM Nasiruddin from Chittagong Division and long-serving BCB Director from Dhaka Metropolis Club category (Mohammedan SC) Mahbub Anam proposed the name of Nazmul Hasan as the BCB president while Director from Dhaka Division Manjur Kader seconded the proposal.

Twenty-four directors out of total 26 elected Nazmul in voice vote. The remaining two directors — Afzalur Rahman Sinha and Shafiul Alam Chowdhury – now aboard, also conveyed their support for Nazmul Hassan.

Later, BCB Chief Election Commissioner Abdur Rahman declared him elected unopposed as there was no rival candidate.

The ad hoc Executive Committee of the BCB will hand over the charge to the newly elected body on Sunday.

The appointment of Nazmul Hassan for the post was made last year as the basis on the board’s constitution, which gave the government the power to name the BCB president.

However, the constitution was amended in July following a ruling by the Supreme Court, which said the president would have to be elected. Hassan had vowed to hold elections within a month of the court order, but the period had lapsed, leading to a delay. Towards the end of September, the BCB had fixed October 10 for the elections.

Before taking over the charge as the 14th president of the BCB, Hassan had served as chairman of the cricket committee in Dhaka Abahani Limited, one of Dhaka’s leading sporting clubs, since 2008.

As an administrator, Hassan is the Managing Director of Beximco Pharmaceuticals Ltd, one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in Bangladesh.
