Some 200 contractual employees of Bangladesh Bank will be terminated for greater interest of the bank, Finance Minister AMA Muhith has said.
Muhith said this after a meeting with Rosatom’s Deputy Director General for International Relations Nikolai Spasskiy in Dhaka on Wednesday.
The minister alleged that former BB governor Atiur Rahman had weakened the structure of the central bank by appointing employees on contractual basis.
“Now, the government plans to remove them from the bank to strengthen the security of the bank.”
The government will provide its own cyber security system for the central bank, he added.
On February 5, hackers stole the $81m from Bangladesh Bank’s accounts in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and transferred it to the Philippines’ Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation, from where the money was moved to local casinos. Another attempt of transferring and releasing $20m to Sri Lanka was stopped and brought back to the country.
Another $850m was supposed to be transferred to a personal bank account in the Philippines, but was blocked by the authorities. The Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) of the Philippines is also investigating the case.
Atiur Rahman resigned from his post of governor of Bangladesh Bank in the wake of the reserve fund hacking.
