Several lawmakers will submit records of alleged enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings and political persecution under the Awami League government overthrown in 2024 to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), responding to complaints filed by six former MPs.
The decision came at a meeting with IPU Secretary General Anda Filip and her delegation at parliament on Tuesday.
Lawmakers will also raise cases of alleged persecution of current and former MPs with the IPU’s human rights committee.
The complaints cite alleged threats, arbitrary arrests and detention, inhumane prison conditions and denial of due process.
The IPU’s Governing Council expressed concern on Apr 19 over four of the former MPs in jail and called for their bail cases to be considered on humanitarian grounds. Bangladesh’s delegation objected.
He said parliament had informally agreed to form a human rights committee to coordinate the response.
Dhaka-14 MP Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem Arman said they would seek IPU assistance in tracing those still missing and prosecuting people accused of the crimes.
Reserved-seat MP Sanjida Islam Tulee said records of alleged enforced disappearances had been presented to the delegation, claiming around 3,500 extrajudicial killings and 600 cases of people being disabled after being shot in the knees.
Filip arrived in Dhaka on Aug 30 and is scheduled to leave on Sept 2.
