Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will review the threat perception with the country’s top cops later this month against a backdrop of recent activities of Islamic fundamentalist groups in eastern India, especially in West Bengal and Assam.
He will meet the country’s Directors General of Police (DGPs) and Inspectors General of Police (IGPs) at an annual event in Guwahati, headquarters of the state of Assam, on Nov 30.
The two-day security conference will begin on Nov 29. Home minister Rajnath Singh will address the officers on the first day.
The chief ministers of all seven north-eastern states, including Sikkim, have been invited to attend the conference.
The meeting with police chiefs assumes added significance following the Burdwan bomb blast, which exposed the Jammat ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB’s) terror plan and the circulation of an al Qaeda video.
Government sources told bdnews24.com that apart from an extensive discussion on activities of Islamic fundamentalist groups, Modi would also dwell on issues like cross-border terrorism and illegal infiltration (from Bangladesh).
Significantly, for the first time, the country’s Intelligence Bureau (IB) is going to take part in a meeting outside Delhi.
Modi will address the conference on Nov 30 and present the President’s Police Medals for distinguished service to officers of the Intelligence Bureau.
The conference will provide an interactive platform for India’s senior police officers and security administrators to discuss and debate various national security issues, and operational, infrastructural and welfare-related problems confronting the police.
On the sidelines, Modi will discuss the region’s overall development with the chief ministers of the eight states.
The prime minister is expected to review projects in sectors such as roads, rural and border development, health and telecom.
He will also assess the ongoing peace talks with militant groups such as the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) and United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA).
