‘Mixed language ad removal soon’

Syed Ashraful Islam on Monday said a list of such mixed-language advertisements on signboards, billboards and banners was being prepared after a field inspection.

“The city corporations will start pulling down these advertisements soon,” he said, responding to a query from Mouazzam Hossain Ratan of Sunamganj-1 on Monday.

The minister added steps had been taken in line with a court order to use only Bangla on all signboards, nameplates, and vehicle number plates.

Measures to stop using English and mixed languages in advertisements in both the electronic and print media are also in place.

“Deputy commissioners, Upazila Parishads, Zilla Parishads, city corporations and municipalities have been directed to inform the Local Government Division on implementation of the court order,” he said.

The city corporations have issued public notices, making field inspections and overseeing the supervision work to implement the order.

Dhaka City Corporation (South) published two notices on Jun 9 and 10 asking for the removal of any such advertisements in the area within three days and to refrain from using them in future.

In the notices the DCC warned it would pull down the advertisements if the advertisers themselves did not do so.

The DCC issued separate letters to ad agencies to remove their advertisements in English or in mixed languages within three days, and asked them not to make such advertisements in future.
