Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said the government was planning to construct marine drive road stretching from Mirsarai upazila of Chittagong to Cox’s Bazar.
The minister made the statement while inaugurating the new taxi cab service of Trust Transport Services under Bangladesh Army Welfare Trust supervision at East Bengal Regiment Centre Conference Hall of Chittagong Cantonment on Sunday.
“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already given instruction in this regard and we will go for feasibility study for the proposed marine drive road project very soon,” he said.
Addressing as the chief guest, the minister told the spectators that the government would introduced 600 taxi cabs in Dhaka and Chittagong in phases to meet public transport crisis.
Expressing hope that Chittagong region would become a hub for trade and commerce, the minister also said the government has taken development plans including constructing tunnel under Karnaphuli River, deep sea port in Sonadia of Cox’s Bazar, coal-fired power plant in Maheskhali.
“50 cabs have initially been launched in the city and rest 100 cabs will be introduced by December while the number will increase according to situation demand,” he said.
“The newly introduced 1500cc Air-conditioned metered taxi cabs, imported from Japan which launched first in Dhaka on April 22, have GPS system, vehicle tracking system and wireless to track all vehicles of this type anywhere of the country,” he said.
Former Chittagong City Corporation Mayor ABM mohiuddin Chowdhury, Chittagong Development Authority Chairman Abdus Salam, Lawmaker Mostafizur Rahman, Chittagong district Superintendent of Police AKM Hafiz Akhter and Chittagong Metropolitan Police (Administration, Traffic and Finance) AKM Shahidur Rahman were in the inaugural programme among others.
