Maya bins media reports; says his family has no link to N’ganj killings

In the wake of media reports about the involvement of his son and son-in-law in the sensational Narayanganj seven murders, Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya on Friday claimed no one of his family members has any link to the gruesome killings.

Over a week after the killings of Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam and six others, Maya in a statement also expressed deep shock over the killings and conveyed sympathy to the bereaved family members.

“Different media reports involving my family members with the incident have seriously hurt me and disgraced my family,” the minister said.

Mentioning that different probe bodies are investigating the killings, he urged all not make any unguarded remarks about the incident so that the investigations are not influenced. “I do believe the truth must be unveiled through the inquiries.”

Maya said he, like the family members of victims, also wants the real offenders to be punished as per the law of the land. “But, I want to equivocally let everybody know that no one of my family members has ever any type of communication or business dealing or relation with those made accused in the cases filed in connections with the murders.”

The minister also called upon all to refrain from making reckless and baseless remarks over the murder so that the real culprits cannot escape.

Nazrul Islam, his three associates, driver, senior lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarker and his driver were killed three days after their abduction in Narayanganj on April 27.

On May 4, Nazrul’s father-in-law Shahidul Islam alleged that Rab members abducted Nazrul from near Shibu Market and killed him in exchange for Tk 6 crore.

Shahidul also alleged that a son of a powerful minister (Maya), on behalf of Narayanganj ward-4 Councillor Nur Hossain brokered the deal with Rab personnel, to kill Nazrul. Nur Hossain was made the prime accused in the murder case.

Later, three Rab officials— Commanding Officer of Rab-11 Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, Maj Arif Hossain and Lt Commander SM Masud Rana—have been dismissed for their alleged involvement in the abduction and killing of the seven people.

Tareque Sayeed Mohammad is Maya’s son-in-law.
