Immigration Police at Dhaka airport yesterday barred BNP Vice-Chairman Sadeque Hossain Khoka from leaving the country to get medical treatment in the US.

BNP chairperson’s press wing official Shayrul Kabir Khan told the Dhaka Tribune that on-duty immigration police personnel at Shahjalal International Airport barred Khoka from flying to America without showing any specific reason.

“He [Khoka] was supposed to go to the USA on an Emirates Airlines flight at 9pm to get better [health] treatment,” he said.

However, Ashique Shahid, special superintendent of Immigration Police, claimed that the BNP leader was not barred from leaving the country; instead the Immigration Police chief had requested him to postpone his travel.

“We have requested him [Khoka] not to leave the country right now, but he can travel after some days,” he added.

When asked if the move was a result of any directive from government high-ups, the official refused to comment.
