The BNP will create a new form of government once it is elected to power, Chairperson Khaleda Zia has said.
She made the remark at an iftar gathering on Thursday.
The opposition chief also asked the party’s activists to prepare for tougher agitation to push for the return of the caretaker government system that she said will follow after Eid-ul-Fitr.
She arranged the iftar party for public representatives of the local government at the Parliament premises.
The programme was joined by supporters of the main opposition including the recently elected mayors of the city corporations.
Khaleda said, “We will form a new type of government in the future through a fair election. We won’t compromise with crimes and corruption.”
“We are a small country with a large population. Bangladesh will be raised to the status of a respectable country if we work together,” she said to the public representatives.
She also sought their support for the demand of caretaker government saying, “We want your full support in this movement to save democracy and votes. I believe the people will wage a movement to secure this demand.”
The parliamentary elections will be held under the current government since the Awami League government made amendments to the Constitution.
The government has not heeded to the opposition’s demand to return the caretaker provision.
The leaders of the ruling party have been saying that fair polls are a possibility under this government since BNP-backed candidates were victorious in all the recent city polls.
The BNP chief said, “There were no fair elections under this government. They tried to stage massive irregularities in Gazipur. But they were not successful with their plots and conspiracies. So fair polls are impossible under their rule.”
“The demand for the caretaker government has been strengthened by the victories at the five city corporation elections.”
She asked that public representatives to fulfil their duties with honesty.
“Stay with the people, work for their welfare. We will honour your rightful demands once we go to power.”
Khaleda termed the current government ‘murderous and corrupt’ and went on to say, “Proper rule can never be implemented in a country where its Prime Minister lies in Parliament. The people of this country want this government to leave.”
“The people of the country are living amid misrule and abuses. Let us pray so that the country is rescued from the clutches of this oppressive government.”
