BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Wednesday expressed profound shock at the death of President Zillur Rahman.
In a condolence message, Khaleda said, “I’m deeply shocked being informed by the media about the death of Bangladesh’s President, veteran politician, independence warrior and Awami Leagues’ ex-acting president Zillur Rahman while undergoing treatment abroad.”
The President died on Wednesday at Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Hospital at the age of 84.
The BNP chief on her behalf and on behalf of BNP conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members. “I seek salivation of the departed soul and pray to the Almighty Allah so that He blesses him with heaven (eternal peace).
Recalling the contributions of Zillur to society and politics, she said, “His positive role during the different critical juncture will remain as part of our national history.”
Describing Zillur as a laconic, gentle and polite man, Khaleda, also the leader of the opposition in parliament, said, he was not used to make indecent and belligerent remarks about his political rivals.
“The country has lost a seasoned, thoughtful and considerate politician at his death. The vacuum that has been created through his death at a time when there is an acute lack of wisdom and good taste will not easily be filled,” the former premier observed.
Khaleda, however, expressed her disappointment over the non-announcement of the death news of the country’s sitting President formally from the state, not sending of any minister concerned abroad to supervise his treatment, not letting the country’s people about his condition through regular bulletins. “I’m simultaneously disheartened and sad also for not informing me about the death news of the President from the government despite holding a constitutional post of the opposition leader.”
She prayed to Allah so that He gives Zillur’s relatives the strength and fortitude to come to terms overcoming the shock, while the nation the courage to overcome the loss caused by the President’s death.
