Legal proceedings of four cases against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia accusing her of inciting violence have been halted by the High Court.
The order came on Thursday after the court heard the former prime minister’s petition challenging the trial court’s cognizance of the chargesheet by police.
It also issued a rule asking why the trial court’s order take the charges into cognizance will not be annulled.
The cases will be stayed until the rule is disposed, said the High Court.
After the BNP was prevented from holding a rally on Jan 5 2015 to protest the anniversary of the 10th Bangladesh Parliamentary Elections, Khaleda Zia called a nationwide blockade.
In the course of the blockade that lasted 90 days, vehicles and buildings were fire-bombed, leading to almost 150 deaths.
The former prime minister has been named in several of those cases on charges of inciting violence.
Three of the cases stayed on Thursday were filed by the Darus Salam Police Station in Dhaka while the other one by Jatrabari police in the capital.
On Sunday, the High Court stayed two other violence cases against Khaleda, which were filed with the Darus Salam police station.
