Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia goes to Tangail on Friday as she embarks on a tour of Jamalpur to address a public rally and distribute relief materials among the recent flood-hit people in the district.

The tour is aimed at mobilising public opinion in favour of the BNP-led 20-party’s demand for a fresh election under a non-partisan government.

It also meant for mounting pressure on the government to stop extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances and repressive acts, and revoking the National Broadcast Policy and 16th amendment to the constitution.

The BNP chief will start her journey for Jamalpur from her Gulshan residence around 5pm, said Khaleda’s media wing member Sayrul Kabir Khan.

She is scheduled to stay overnight at Jamuna Resort along the bank of the Jamuna River at the eastern side of Jamuna Bridge in Tangail on Friday.

Later, Khaleda, also a former Prime Minister, will start for Jamalpur around 11am on Saturday. She will address a public rally to be arranged by the local unit of the 20-party alliance at Singhajani High School ground in Sadar upazila in the afternoon.

The BNP chief is scheduled to return to the capital on the same day after attending the rally.

The local unit of the 20-party has taken elaborate preparations to welcome their leader and make the rally success, BNP sources said.

This will be Khaleda’s fifth district tour after the January-5 election boycotted by the BNP-led opposition alliance.

Earlier, Khaleda went to Rajbari, on March 1, Munshiganj on May 28, Joypurhat on June 22 and Brahmanbaria on September 23 and addressed public rallies there.

On September 18, the 20-party alliance rescheduled the rally for September 27 from September 25.
