Kader Siddique made the call in a meeting with Abdul Hamid held as a part of the president’s initiative to consult the country’s major political parties over the reformation of the Election Commission.
A 12-member team led by Kader met the president at Bangabhaban.
Talking to the president, Kader said he saw no logic in passing laws in a parliament where the ruling party was not elected by the people.
In the hour long meeting, he requested the president to make an Election Commission which consists of qualified individuals. “The Election Commission is the lifeline of political parties and it should be an honest and accountable institution,” he added.
Krishak Sramik Janata League also placed a nine-point demand, including the addition of a woman commissioner in the Election Commission.
He also said: “Many people have a misconception that the president cannot form the Election Commission but according to Article 118 of the constitution, the president has full authority to create the commission.”
Following the meeting, Kader Siddique thanked the president for taking the initiative to reform the Election Commission.
