JAMAAT REGISTRATION ILLEGAL SC upholds HC verdict

Rejects Jamaat plea seeking stay on HC order

The Supreme Court on Monday upheld till further order the High Court verdict which declared the registration of Jamaat-e-Islami with the Election Commission illegal.

The chamber judge of the Appellate Division Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik rejected the petition filed by the Jamaat seeking stay on the HC verdict.

The judge came with the order saying there is no merit in the stay petition and the petitioner’s lawyer did not place any argument in support of the stay petition.

The Jamaat could move a regular appeal before the Appellate Division against the verdict after getting its full text, the judge said.

The HC on August 1 following a writ petition declared the registration of Jamaat with the EC as “illegal and unlawful”.

Jamaat on the same day filed the petition with the SC seeking stay on the HC verdict.
