The BNP-led 18-Party alliance leaders of Chittagong have termed the Sheikh Hasina government illegal.
At a rally at Kazir Dewrhi intersection in Chittagong on Friday, they also announced that the government would be ‘buried’ on Nov 7.
“The government under Sheikh Hasina is not falling, it has already fallen,” observed Chittagong City BNP President Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury.
He said the government would be buried on Nov 7, the ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’. “They will remain in the cold storage before burial.”
The BNP leader said the 18-Party alliance would get their votes through non-party government.
Khosru said, “We want to assure them that the BNP will not go for any politics of violence. We want to move forward together.”
BNP Central Vice Chairman Abdullah Al Noman said, “We won’t accept any election under Sheikh Hasina. Our mass movement has turned into mass uprising.”
He said the ‘mass uprising’ would not accept any law dictated by Hasina.
The former Commerce Minister vowed to stick to their demand for restoration of a caretaker government system.
Noman flayed Awami League for dillydallying over rallies in Chittagong. “It was good that they did not allow us to hold the rally at the Laldighi ground. The 18-party alliance rally has turned into a human sea whereas the Shahid Minar rally did not see more than 2000 turn up.”
The Awami League held a rally at the Shahid Minar roundabout in the port city around the same time.
Jamaat activists demanded release of the party leaders arrested for their crimes against humanity during 1971 Liberation War. However, no BNP leader was seen pressing for the demand.
Earlier, several thousands-strong gathering of leaders and activists of the alliance, including the Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir, joined the rally braving rains with banners, placards and festoons since 1pm.
Love Lane, Lalkhan Bazar and WASA intersection were off-limits to traffic ahead of the rally.
Police in large numbers were posted around the rally venue but BGB personnel were not seen there.
