The High Court on Sunday stayed a lower court order that had granted remand for top five BNP leaders, including Barrister Moudud Ahmed, MK Anwar and Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah, in two cases.

An HC bench comprising Justice Borhanuddin and Justice KM Kamrul Kader passed the order after hearing a writ petition.

The court also asked for interrogating the BNP leaders at jail gate and not taking them on further remand.

Earlier in the morning, Barrister Mahbubuddin Khokon filed the writ petition on behalf of the BNP leaders challenging the lower court order placing them on remand.

The two other BNP leaders are BNP chairperson’s adviser and former FBCCI president Abdul Awal Mintoo and her special assistant Shimul Biswas.

A CMM court here on Thursday allowed eight days’ remand for each of the five arrested senior BNP leaders rejecting their bail prayers in two cases filed for vandalising and torching vehicles and attacking cops.

After hearing both the prosecution and the defence, Metropolitan Magistrate Md Rezaul Karim granted five days’ remand in one case and three days more in another case.

On the night of November 8, plainclothes police arrested BNP standing committee members Barrister Moudud Ahmed, MK Anwar and Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah from the city’s Karwanbazar area as they came out of Sonargaon Hotel.

On the following day, at about 1 am, Abdul Awal Mintoo and Shimul Biswas were arrested from in front of BNP chairperson’s Gulshan residence.

The five BNP leaders were shown arrested in the two cases filed with Motijheel Police Station on November 5 and September 24 for vandalism, arson and attacking policemen.
