HC convicts Prothom Alo joint editor for contempt

The High Court has convicted Prothom Alo Joint Editor Mizanur Rahman Khan for writing a column against the anticipatory bail which is broadly contemptuous.

The bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Zafar Ahmed delivered the judgement on Thursday afternoon.

The HC bench imposed a fine of TK5000 for Mizanur’s contempt and ordered him to stand in the dock till the end of the session as a punishment.

The court also exempted Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman from the contempt charge as he sought unconditional apology from the court.

‘You may leave’

After convicting Prothom Alo Joint Editor Mizanur Rahman Khan for contempt of court, the High Court ordered him to stand in the dock till the end of the session as a punishment.

Mizanur Rahman went on the dock at 2:25pm.

After 25 minutes of the order, Justice Naima Haider told Mizanur Rahman “You may leave.”

Earlier, the HC had issued rule seeking explanations from Matiur Rahman and Mizanur Rahman Khan, joint news editor of the daily, as to why they should not be punished for contempt of court for publishing columns on granting anticipatory bails.
