Govt renames 5 Coast Guard vessels, dropping ‘Joy Bangla’ and names of national leaders

The government has renamed five Bangladesh Coast Guard vessels, replacing the names of four national leaders and changing the name of a fifth vessel that carried the slogan “Joy Bangla.”

The changes were disclosed in a letter issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs yesterday (5 November).

Under the approved changes, “BCGS Tajuddin” has been renamed “BCGS Nurul Islam,” while “BCGS Syed Nazrul” will now be known as “BCGS Firoz Kabir.”

Similarly, “BCGS Mansur Ali” has been renamed “BCGS M Humayun Kabir,” and “BCGS Kamruzzaman” will now be called “BCGS Ashraf Siddiqui.”

The vessel previously named “BCGS Joy Bangla” has been renamed “BCGS Adommo Bangla,” according to the letter.

According to home ministry sources, the ministry had instructed the Coast Guard to change the names of the vessels. The Coast Guard subsequently submitted proposals for five new names, which were approved by the ministry yesterday.

The letter stated that the renaming had received approval from the competent authority.

Sources at the Coast Guard said that the four individuals whose names have been given to the vessels were Bangladesh Navy officers who were killed during operations at home and abroad.
