BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday accused the government of indiscriminately killing people since it assumed office by force.
“The current regime, which grabbed power by force through a lopsided election on January-5, is indiscriminately killing the country’s people,” he said.
Addressing an extended meeting of BNP’s alliance partner Khelafat Mojlish, the BNP spokesman also alleged that the Awami League is killing its opponents as they did during the 1972-75 period.
“The then Awami League government in 1972 had formed Rakkhi Bahini that killed thousands of people, including youths, after picking them up at night for expressing their different opinions. Following the same ugly style, they’re also killing their opponents now after picking them up.’”
Justifying his party chief’s claim for disbanding Rab, Fakhrul said the elite force was formed with an aim to check terrorism and militancy, but now it has taken a stance against the country’s innocent people. ”They (Rab) are killing people in exchange of money. So, now the question has risen in public mind about its necessity.”
He claimed that 310 opposition leaders and activists were killed in the last three months.
Mentioning that country’s people have now no right to express their opinions, the BNP leader said the oppositions are not allowed to raise their voice. “Those who speak against the government are harassing and implicating them in false cases. It can’t be a democratic practice. A one-party rule has been established in the country using the state machinery.”
He criticised the government for arresting 21 Jamaat leaders in Chittagong, including its Chittagong city unit ameer and former MP ANM Shamsul Islam.
There is no alternative to waging a strong movement to oust this ‘repressive regime’, Fakhrul called upon the leaders and activists of the BNP-led 19-party alliance to get united to take to the streets.
