Amid the sudden price hike of onion in the domestic market, the government is now planning to import it through the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB).

The government will also take proper steps so that the importers do not face any obstacles towards onion import.

In an effort to keep the onion price stable and at tolerable level for the consumers, the Commerce Ministry took the decision at a meeting held at the ministry with Commerce Secretary Mahbub Ahmed in the chair today.

The meeting also asked the market monitoring teams to strengthen their drives to ensure stable price.

The overall domestic production situation, import and demand were discussed at the meeting, said a PID handout.

However, the Commerce Ministry will sit with the importers and business leaders tomorrow (Sunday) at 3:30pm to find out the reasons behind the price hike of onion and take steps to stabilise the overheated market.

Representatives from the National Board of Revenue and the Bangladesh Bank will also attend the meeting.
Onion price hit record high Tk 75 per kilogram on the back of a supply crunch in India, the country’s main source of vegetable.

A key cooking ingredient, it experienced a price hike of around 43 percent over the past two weeks due to heavy rainfall in the neighbouring country, which ended up destroying the majority of the crops.
