BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said the denial of permission for their peaceful programme in the city has proved that government has buried democracy.
“The government’s vengeance attitude of not allowing the peaceful programme of March for Democracy in Nayapaltan on Sunday has proved that the government has buried the word democracy,” he said in a statement.
The BNP spokesman also alleged that the government by not allowing the opposition to hold their programme is pushing the country towards a deep uncertainty.
Fakhrul said the 18-party is determined to observe its peaceful programme on Sunday defying the government’s plot to foil it and all barriers and restrictions.
He also alleged that the government in the name of drive by joint forces are arresting the opposition leaders and activists across the country and harassing their family members.
Fakhrul said the government out of its greed for power has created an anarchic situation in the country only to hold a farcical election.
Accusing the government of putting the law enforcers against people over a peaceful programme, the BNP leader said the regime will be held responsible for any untoward incident caused by its move.
He condemned the filing of a case against BNP leaders and activists, including party joint secretary general Mizanur Rahman Minu and city mayor Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul, in connection with the killing of police in Rajshahi.
The BNP leader demanded the government withdraw the false cases filed against the opposition leaders and activists and immediately release those were arrested.
