Ganajagaran Mancha brought a procession in Dhaka denouncing the Islami Chhatra Shibir-sponsored strike on Wednesday.
Witnesses said two explosions, possibly triggered by strikers, were reported from near the Shahbagh intersection just before the procession.
They said bike-riding youths drove by and lobbed the bombs near Pubali Bank around 10:50am.
However, Shahbagh Police Station OC Sirajul Islam dismissed them as crackers. “We found some papers at scene, as in crackers.”
Ganajagaran Mancha brought out their procession from Shahbagh around 11:30am. Imran H Sarker was leading it. The procession went round TSC, Shahbagh, Kataban and ended at Shahbagh.
Afterwards, Mancha spokesperson Sarker said that the people had thwarted Jamaat-Shibir’s strike. “They will not be allowed to implement any strikes in Bangladesh.”
He said Mancha units elsewhere also brought out processions denouncing the Shibir strike.
He called upon the Election Commission to take actions against radicals whipping up religious passions in City Corporation elections.
