Ruling party MP Manjurul Islam has been sent to jail after a Gaibandha court rejected bail for him on charges of shooting a nine-year-old boy.
The Awami League lawmaker was produced before the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Moinul Hasan Yousuf on Thursday.
He was taken to Gaibandha in the morning after his arrest in Dhaka on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Liton’s supporters clashed with police outside the court premises.
Police took him to the court around 12 pm.
Before he was produced in court, around 1,000 of Liton’s supporters tried to enter the court premises and clashes erupted.
Witnesses said police charged with batons and fired rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. At least 20 people were injured.
On Oct 2, fourth-grader Shahadat Hossain Sourav was wounded when Liton allegedly fired at him.
A case was filed the next day by the family.
The incident triggered a furore in Liton’s constituency with residents calling for the cancellation of his Parliament membership.
Another resident from his constituency filed a case accusing the MP of looting and vandalism.
Liton had not been seen in public after the Oct 2 shooting incident until he surfaced on Monday at the High Court for the hearing of his petitions seeking anticipatory bail.
The court turned down the pleas and ordered him to surrender before the trial court by Sunday (Oct 18).
After the High Court order, Liton’s counsel had said police would not be able to arrest his client before Oct 18.
But the State moved the Supreme Court and managed to stay the High Court order on Wednesday.
The MP was arrested from Dhaka’s Uttara the same night and was immediately moved to Gaibandha.
