Father of a leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of ruling Awami League, was killed in a factional clash between two rival groups of the party over establishing supremacy in Abdalpur village of Kushtia sadar upazila on Sunday morning.
The deceased is Mainuddin Biswas, father of Islamic University Chhatra League unit general secretary Jewel Rana Halim, reports UNB.
Quoting locals, police said that there had been a long standing dispute between Abdalpur union AL general secretary Golam Mostafa and UP chairman Ali Haider.
Tense situation was prevailing in the area since the 11th parliamentary elections held on 30 December as the two groups were in loggerheads over a trifling matter centring vote.
Sequel to the enmity, several hundred supporters of Golam Mostafa equipped with locally made weapons swooped on the house of Ali Haider around 6:30am that triggered a fierce clash in the village, leaving Mainuddin, critically injured.
Later, the injured was taken to Kushtia General Hospital where physicians declared him dead on arrival.
After the incident, SM Tanvir Arafat, superintendent of Kushtia police visited the spot.
Additional policemen have been deployed in and around the village to avoid any further unwanted situation.
The victim’s son Jewel claimed that his father was a supporter of Ali Haider.
