A total of 34 people including six top BNP and Jamaat leaders were sued today for their alleged involvement with last night’s arson attack on a bus in Bangla Motor of the capital that left a traffic police dead.
The accused leaders are: BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, party joint secretary general Amanullah Aman, BNP standing committee members Mirza Abbas, and Goyeshwar Chandra Roy and lawmaker Barkatullah Bulu while Shafiqur Rahman is the acting secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami.
Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told The Daily Star that the opposition leaders were accused of instigating and masterminding the attack.
The case was filed with Ramna Police Station this afternoon mentioning the names of 12 to 14 people. Around 18 to 20 unnamed persons were also accused in the case, Selim Mia, an inspector (Investigation) of the police station, told The Daily Star.
Ferdous, a traffic constable, was killed and Faizul Islam, a constable, and Bayzid, driver of the requisitioned bus, were injured as arsonists set fire to the vehicle at Bangla Motor in the capital around 11:20pm last night, hours after the opposition alliance’s 83-hour blockade ended.
Constable Faizul told The Daily Star they were on duty at Bangla Motor until 11:00pm yesterday and were about to leave the place. As soon as they got on the bus, there was a huge bang and the vehicle was ablaze.
He managed to get down as he was near the door but Ferdous could not since he was inside and was burnt alive.
The driver jumped out through the window, Faizul added.
