Ershad’s JP to go it alone

JP is one of the allies in the ruling Awami League-led 18-party grand alliance. Ershad blamed Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina for his decision to walk out and go it alone.

“I will be in power if I win the elections alone; if defeated, I will accept it – I will be destroyed. But I cannot serve anyone anymore,” said Ershad, attending a rally in Sylhet on Wednesday.

He also explained his reasons for parting ways.

“I should not participate in the election with those who divide the country on the basis of the identities of believer and atheist. If I do, people will see me as an agent.”

“The Prime Minister is seeking votes for the Awami League. She is not asking people to vote for the grand alliance. I urge you to cast your vote for the plough.”

Ershad has been talking about quitting the alliance for the past one year, but stressed each time that his final decision would be taken at the right moment.

“The country is heading for uncertainty now.”

“The Prime Minister says the next elections will be fair. But how you can expect an election to take place when even democracy does not exist? How the next polls will be held and who will take part are all uncertain at the moment.”

The main opposition BNP has threatened to boycott the next election if a neutral caretaker government is not constituted to oversee the poll. Ershad has said he will side with the BNP in the event of a boycott.

The rally was organised by JP for its biannual conference.

“A change is due to save our backs from bad governance. Vote for the Jatiya Party, golden days will return.”

He claimed that people have lost their faith in both the Awami League and the BNP.
