Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad today urged the Election Commission to extend the deadline for submission of nomination papers for the 10th parliamentary election by seven days.
The former military dictator made the call a day after the EC fixed the deadline at December 2.
Announcing the polls schedule yesterday, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad said the nomination papers would be scrutinised on December 5-6 and the deadline for withdrawal is December 13.
The election will be held on January 5, he announced.
“It will be tough for a party to submit the nomination papers by the deadline after scrutinising all the necessary papers within such a short time,” Ershad said in a press briefing at his Banani office.
Urging the government to give magistracy power to army to maintain the election-time law and order situation, the JP chairman alleged that the level playing field for the election is yet to be ensured.
