TIB chairperson Sultan Kamal said on Thursday that all decisions in the government are being made at a single centre — a system which, she believes, is against the sprit of democracy and good governance.
“All directives in our country come from one place. Such practice is the product of a highly centralised structure,” she told a press conference organised by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB).
This practice, Sultana Kamal added, is not coherent with the sprit of democracy and good governance.
She cited the example of the office of comptroller and auditor general (CAG) of Bangladesh, which is supposed to be a constitutionally independent body. “But practically it can’t work independently,” she said.
All activities at the CAG office including appointment, promotion, and transfer, are influenced by politics, she pointed out. “No one can come out from this culture and it seems like an epidemic.”
TIB executive director Iftekharuzzaman said, “CAG is plagued by two kinds of problems – internal and external.”
TIB presented a report on the challenge of good governance at the conference at the CAG office.
