News - Ershad advocates for presidential govt

Advocating for reverting to presidential form of government, Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad on Saturday said his party will come out winner if the election is held under the presidential system after necessary constitutional amendment.

“I’m throwing a challenge (to Hasina, Khaleda)…Jatiya Party will win the election contesting it independently against the candidates of all the parties if it is held under the presidential system,” he said.

Ershad said the parliamentary form of governments so far have failed to effectively govern the country. “So, restore the presidential form of government by amending the Constitution.”

The former military ruler made the remarks while addressing a function at his party office.

The JP chairman said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had introduced the presidential rule that was followed by Ziaur Rahman. “I had also ruled the country under the presidential system.”

He claimed that the country witnessed a better development under those presidential rules. “There were 374 hartals during my rule but development was not hampered.”

Ershad said the JP will restore the full-fledged upazila system, introduce provincial system and amend the Constitution to restore presidential system in the country if it returns to power.

JP secretary general ABM Ruhul Amin Hawladar, Presidium member and Ershad’s political adviser Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu, JP leaders Sunil Shuvo Roy and Tajul Islam Chowdhury were, among others, present.
