The DNA samples of all six suspects killed in a military operation following the terror attack on Holey Artisan Bakery and O’ Kitchen restaurant at Gulshan have matched with their relatives, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have confirmed.
On Tuesday, DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Masudul Rahman told bdnews24.com, “DNA samples of the six militants had been collected and tested against family members. The samples have matched.”
On Jul 1, the brazen terror attack by five young gunmen on the upscale cafe at the capital’s diplomatic zone left 22 people including 17 foreigners and 2 police officers dead.
A military operation about 12 hours later brought their siege to an end. Of the six slain in the operation, five were termed as operatives of banned militant outfit JMB by police later.
A combination photo of an elderly woman holding a mobile phone displaying the picture of Saiful Islam Chowkider, wearing a chef’s attire, and the dead attacker’s picture has appeared on Facebook.
The sixth, one Saiful Islam Chowkider, was a chef at the cafe. Police believe he had aided the militants in carrying out the attack.
Police have already named all six in the anti-terrorism case they started.
Of the five, two were students of a Bogra madrasa. The other three were students of of posh English medium schools in Dhaka.
Deputy Commissioner Masudul Rahman said the bodies of all six are still preserved at the mortuary of the Combined Military Hospital.
The bodies of the 17 foreigners have been sent home while the bodies of the 5 Bangladeshis have been handed over to their respective families.
Among the attackers, Nibras Islam was a former North South University alumnus while another attacker, Rohan Ibn Imtiaz was a BRAC University student. The third one, Mir Sabih Mubashir, was a student of Scholastica school.
The two other attackers, Safiqul Islam Ujjal from Bogra’s Dhunat Upazila and Md Khairuzzaman of Shahjahanpur Upazila both were madrasa students.
