Dhaka wants int’l buyers to consider BD products

Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali on Monday said the international buyers should consider the fair prices of Bangladeshi products so that the country could enable the exporters to improve the working environment and raise the wages of workers further.

 

He made the remark during a meeting with the visiting delegation of the European Parliament (EP) at the state guesthouse Padma in the city.

 

Thanking the European Union (EU) for its continued support in providing duty-, quota-free access for the LDCs, including Bangladesh in the EU market, under its EBA (everything but arms) arrangement, the Foreign Minister acknowledged the EU’s support in improving the work environment in Bangladesh’s RMG sector.

 

He apprised the delegation of the government efforts to achieve a safe and friendly work environment in the sector.

 

During the meeting, Chair of the delegation for Relations with South Asia, EP Jean Lambert said the European Union will continue to work closely with the government of Bangladesh, said a Foreign Ministry media release.

 

Lambert praised Bangladesh’s remarkable achievement in the socioeconomic sector and said a democratic and politically stable environment in the country is required to keep up the continued success in economy and social development.

 

Welcoming the visit of the EP delegation to Dhaka, Mahmood Ali expressed satisfaction on the excellent relationship of Bangladesh and the EU.

 

Terming the EU as an old and tested friend of Bangladesh playing a crucially important role in the development of Bangladesh, he conveyed to the chair of Bangladesh’s deep appreciation of the EU for its invaluable contribution, continued cooperation and assistance for sustainable economic development and struggle for achieving self-reliance.

 

Highlighting the importance of the issue of climate change to Bangladesh, Mahmood Ali appreciated the EU assistance and funding in adaptation projects in Bangladesh.

 

Both the Foreign Minister and the Chair of the delegation dignitaries agreed on a more meaningful partnership between Bangladesh and the EU.

 

Head of Delegation of European Union (EU) to Bangladesh Ambassador William Hanna, other members of the cross-party EP delegation – John Attard-Montalto (Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats), Salvador Sedo i Alabart (European People’s Party), and Niccolò Rinaldi (Alliance of Democrats and Liberals) were also present.
