Dhaka Bar Association (DBA) today decided not to provide legal support to the accused in the gruesome murder of eight-year-old Ramisa Akhter in Dhaka’s Pallabi.

The decision was taken at an emergency virtual meeting of the executive committee of the bar association, Mohammad Abul Kalam Khan, general secretary of the association, told The Daily Star.

Kalam said, “None of the DBA members will defend the accused — Sohel Rana and his wife Swapna Akter — in court. We will issue a public notice in this regard tomorrow. We will also inform the chief metropolitan magistrate of Dhaka.”

They made the decision as primary investigation proved that the accused committed the heinous crime, he added.

He also claimed that the decision did not violate the rights of the accused.

A day after the murder and rape, the victim’s father, Abdul Hannan Mollah, filed the case with Pallabi Police Station, accusing the couple and an unidentified person.

On Wednesday, Sohel confessed before a magistrate to raping and killing Ramisa.
