The police have not yet detained the main culprit Shahidul Haque
Detective Branch (DB) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) have recovered Tk2,99,50,000 which was stolen from Chittagong city’s office of Group Four Security (G4S) Services Bangladesh Private Limited.
The DB personnel also detained one Md Bashirul Alam, 24, of Moheshkhali island of Cox’s Bazar district, who is a Muajjin of Chittagong City College Jame Mosque at Sadarghat area, as the stolen money was found in his residence at the area.
Police, however, could not detain G4S’s security guard Shahidul Haque alias Shantan, 24, of Narshingdi district, who was on duty during the theft incident.
CMP Commissioner Abdul Jalil Mandal at a press conference in CMP headquarters said they were trying to nab him.
“The main culprit managed to flee evading strong vigilance of law enforcers as the money recovery news was published on electronic and online media immediately after their drive,” he said; seeking cooperation of the media for their drive in the future.
The commissioner said they conducted a drive at Bashir’s residence at around 3am following a tip-off and found the money in two big luggages.
However, the arrestee said security guard Shantan had taken the money in three sacks in his residence on October 12 and they kept those into two luggages.
On October 12, Shantan, wearing masks, allegedly lifted Tk3 crore from the G4S office where Tk54 crore were stored.
G4S Senior Manager Tarique Mansur lodged a case with Khulshi police station early Monday as the security agency noticed the matter on Sunday night by analysing their CCTV footage, said police.
In the press conference, G4S official Tarique said they have legal permission from Bangladesh Bank to store cash money and carry the cash money for security reason.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mainul Islam Bhuiyan of Khulshi police station said the agency did not inform the police about their storage of the huge amount of money in their office.
The G4S officials who were present in the conference avoided the questions of journalists while CMP Commissioner said they were investigating the entire incident along with the legislative and security measures of G4S.
The commissioner also said Shantan has two national identity cards and three addresses which are false. However, the present G4S officials avoided the point.
