Train communications on Chittagong-Dhaka and Chittagong-Sylhet routes resumed on Tuesday evening, 15 hours after its suspension following the derailment of an express train.
The engine and six bogies of the Chittagong-bound train, ‘Turna Nishita’, coming from Dhaka veered off the tracks near Padua Bazar level-crossing in Sadar Dakkhin upazila around 4:45am, leaving 20 people injured, said loco master Tofazzel Haque.
The Police Super of Comilla, Mahbubur Rahman, said the accident took place as hartal supporters removed fishplates in the area ahead of shutdown.
The rail communications resumed around 7:45 pm after two relief trains from Akhaura and Laksam salvaged the derailed engine and compartments, Mohammad Hamidul Haque, assistant engineer of local Railway, said.
The authorities had to cancel the schedules of five trains on the routes following the incident, according to Chittagong Railway (eastern zone).
The injured were admitted to Comilla Medical College Hospital.
