A court here on Sunday asked the authorities concerned to take steps subject to proper investigation into the mater against nine Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members over the allegation of custodial torture on businessman Shahnur Alam, a local Awami League leader, who later died in a hospital.
District and Sessions Judge Mohamamd Kawsar passed the order.
Earlier on June 4, after hearing both sides, judicial magistrate Nazmun Nahar asked the officer-in-charge of Nabinagar Police Station to register a case against the alleged nine Rab men.
The following day, she was withdrawn from the designated court without assigning any reason.
Maj AZM Shakib Siddiqui, Bhiarab camp commander of Rab-14, is among the 11 accused named in the complaint.
On April 29, members of Rab-14 allegedly picked up Shahnur, 43, a leader of Nabinagar upazila Awami League, from his Bogdohor village home.
On June 1, Mehedi Hasan, Shahnur’s brother, lodged the complaint against the Rab members.
According to the complaint, Mehedi Hasan alleged that the Rab members inhumanly tortured his captured brother at their Bhairab camp in Kishoreganj, leaving him seriously injured.
Later on May 4, Brahmanbaria prison authorities referred injured Shahnur to Sadar Hospital as his condition deteriorated.
As his condition deteriorated further, Shahnur was shifted to Comilla Medical College Hospital where he died on May 6.
Besides the 11 Rab men, two civilians have also been made accused in the complaint.
