“Opposition leaders and activists are being murdered after they are reported missing. They’re also being implicated in false cases,” he claimed, while speaking at an event in Dhaka.

Roy also alleged that opposition parties were being prevented from holding rallies and public meetings. “They are denying us the freedom of speech.”

He warned his party would be left with no alternative but to take to the streets if the situation persisted.

BNP’s youth front Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal organised the meeting in the National Press Club auditorium demanding the release of all ‘political prisoners’ and the withdrawal of all ‘false’ cases filed against its leaders and activists including Juba Dal President Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal and General Secretary Saiful Alam Nirab.

Gayeshwar said, “The government formed through a voter-less election has no legitimacy. It is dead. They performed their Janaja (funeral prayer). Now they only need to be buried.”

He alleged that not even five percent of votes were cast on in the “farcical” poll. “The Prime Minister represents only five percent of the people.”

Gayeshwar claimed that 95 percent the people were with BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

Calling for a “tougher fight” against the government, the BNP leader said, “The country is being run by three governments – Shahbagh movement spokesperson Imran H Sarker, Sheikh Hasina’s government and the Indian government.”

“It is clear from the Indian Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh’s tour of Dhaka before the January 5 polls and different remarks on the election that they (India) were interfering in our national elections. But we never talk about India’s general election. This makes it clear whether the country has its sovereignty.”

The BNP Standing Committee Member added that his party’s movement for the restoration of a poll-time non-party caretaker government was on.
“The movement is continuing. We’ve to release our imprisoned leaders and activists by breaking the jail gates through this movement.”

Presided over by Juba Dal’s Senior Vice-President Abdus Salam Azad, the meeting was addressed, among others, by BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Juba Dal President Moazzem Hossain Alal, Vice-Presidents Khalek Hawlader and Selimuzzaman Selim.
