The cabinet on Monday approved in principle the proposal of constituting the eighth administrative division with its headquarters in Mymensingh, in a bid to de-centralize further the administration.
Presiding over the weekly cabinet meeting at the secretariat, prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, asked the Cabinet Division to initiate the procedure for setting up the new administrative division in Mymensingh, incorporating its surrounding districts.
‘The prime minister has also instructed the Cabinet Division to look into how Dhaka and Chittagong could be divided into two more divisions—one in Faridpur and another in Comilla or Noakhali,’ cabinet secretary Muhammad Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said in a press briefing after the meeting.
He said the Cabinet Division would look into the proposal and prepare a report recommending which districts to be incorporated into each of the new divisions.
The report would be placed in a meeting of the National Implementation Committee on the Administrative Reform for final approval.
