‘Bringing democracy back’ in Bangladesh is the main goal of the BNP at the moment, not coming to power, says Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
The BNP acting secretary general on Monday said the Awami League had established BAKSAL in past and now, in its present term, was again trying to establish a one-party rule to be in power for good.
At a discussion at the National Press Club, he said, “They have taken control of everything. Now they have introduced a broadcast policy to control the mass media.”
So, the goal of the BNP and its allies was to restore democracy and not come to power, he added.
“There is no democracy in the country. People want it back.”

Fakhrul also criticised the different stances adopted by journalists over the National Broadcast Policy.
The BNP spokesperson said their decision to boycott the Jan 5 national elections was right.
“The opposition’s 310 leaders and activists were killed, 65 others abducted and hundreds were injured during that movement,” he claimed.
“Many say the decision to boycott the Jan 5 polls was wrong. I disagree with them. By boycotting that election, people have proved that fair polls cannot be held under the Awami League administration,” Fakhrul said.
