PM resorting to scorched earth policy: BNP

BNP on Wednesday alleged that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resorted to scorched earth policy to hang onto power.

“The Prime Minister has vowed to cling to power sending all the people of the country graveyard. She has restored to earth-scorching policy,” BNP joint secretary general Salauddin Ahmad said.

The BNP spokesman brought the allegation in a statement sent to media through email.

Salauddin warned that the government will be held solely responsible if the democratic process in the country is interrupted.

Calling on the premier to accept the demand for restoration of the non-party election-time government, Salauddin said, “Shun the suicidal path for the sake of the country and the nation and accept the demand for the non-party government and take step to postpone the schedule for a unilateral election.”

“If you concede to the demand for the non-party government, people will consider your safe exit with sympathy,” he further said.

Rejecting the Prime Minister’s remarks that a congenial atmosphere for holding polls is prevailing in the country, Salauddin said HM Ershad, a key partner of this illegal government, is also saying there is no environment to hold polls.

He added, “Ershad asked his party candidates to withdraw nomination papers as he wouldn’t contest the polls. So, the government has lost its power to hold one-sided farcical polls.”

Voicing concern over the causalities of a good number people in the ongoing movement, Salauddin said, “The government is encouraging extremism by besieging BNP office, snatching the freedom of expression and press, closing newspapers and television channels to stop publishing of objective news.  So, there is a possibility that the besieged democracy can be endangered.”

About the 18-party’s blockade programme, Salauddin claimed that two people were killed while 700 injured, 267 arrested across the country on the 5th day of the 18-party’s 131-hour blockade.

Terming the government as a gun-trotting and fascist one, the BNP leader urged all to be vocal against the government and take to the streets to ensure its fall.
