A Comilla court has sent BNP Standing Committee Member MK Anwar to prison after turning down his bail plea in two mayhem cases.
Judge Shuhudullah Kaiser of Comilla’s Fifth Cognisance Court gave the order on Tuesday after Anwar appeared before him in the morning.
The senior BNP leader was represented at the hearing by 50 lawyers while only Assistant Public Prosecutor Khorshed Alam stood for the state.
On Feb 2, pro-blockade activists lobbed a Molotov cocktail on a Dhaka-bound Icon Paribahan bus. Eight passengers died of burns.
Anwar’s lawyer Harunur Rashid said the High Court on June 9 had granted the BNP leader four-week bail in two cases filed over the incident and asked him to appear at the trial court.
However, the state appealed against the order and got a stay .
The BNP leader was given a week to appear before the court.
“He appeared before the Comilla court on Aug 3 in keeping with the High Court order and asked for bail.
But the case dockets did not reach the court at the time and he reappeared on Tuesday.”
