Opposition BNP on Saturday rejected the Prime Minister’s offer that she might request for dissolution of Parliament for a fresh election if the opposition stops movement and reaches a compromise, saying it is Sheikh Hasina’s evil design to foil their current agitation.

“The Prime Minister’s so many pre-conditions clearly demonstrate it’s (her proposal) nothing but an evil-plan to confuse the mass people who are on the movement and perpetuate parliament and government elected without a vote being cast,” said BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan.

He continued, “People won’t step into the trap they’ve set up.”

The BNP leader came up with the remarks while briefing reporters at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office about the first day of the 18-party’s 72-hour fresh spell of blockade programme that began at 6am on Saturday.

Earlier, at a meeting on Thursday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina hinted that she might request for dissolution of Parliament for a fresh election if there is any compromise with the opposition. “But she (Khaleda) has to stop killing and blockade, she has to leave the company of Jamaat for any dialogue. If there’s any compromise, we’ll dissolve Parliament, if necessary, for holding the election again.”

Disapproving her proposal, Nazrul said, “We want to clearly state that there’s no scope for holding talks about the 11th parliament or any other election. We also didn’t have any interest or have interest now to talk about it.”

He also alleged that the Prime Minister herself shut all the paths for reaching a compromise with her such remarks.

The BNP leader mentioned that they engaged in dialogue with the ruling party through the mediation of the UN to discuss the framework of the election-time government for holding the 10th parliamentary elections in a free, fair and credible manner with the participation of all parties.

“We want to tell the government to understand the reality as there’s still time. Don’t go against people and don’t try to confuse them,” he said.

Nazrul said an opposition man was killed and 523 others were injured during the first day of the blockade by the law enforcers and ruling party activists.

Besides, police arrested over 385 leaders and activists of BNP, including Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal acting president Bazlul Kraim Chowdhur Abed.

As his attention was drawn to the wealth statements of the ministers and ruling party leaders published in different media, the BNP leader said people will be able to know in time about the wealth information what the ruling party leaders did not mention in their statements. “But what have already been published in the media is appalling.”

“Seeing their wealth statements, it seems that the ministers and leaders of the government were given a magical lamp of Aladin by which they amassed the assets,” he observed.
