BNP men clash with police, BGB in Sitakundu; 25 hurt

At least 25 people, 10 with bullet, were injured as local BNP activists clashed with police and BGB members in Sitakunda upazila headquarters in the district on Saturday.

 

The injured were admitted to different hospitals of the area.

 

Sitakundu Muradpur union BNP president Mohorom Ali,60, also a freedom fighter, Yusuf Nizami, Nurunnabi Saiful and Karimul Mawla were among the injured.

 

Witness said activists of local unit BNP brought out a procession in the area around 4:20 pm as part of the party’s central programme. As police and members of Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) tried to disperse the opposition activists they attacked the law-enforcers, triggering a clash.

 

Police fired rubber bullets, lobbed tear gas canisters and charged batons on the BNP activists, leaving 25 people injured.

 

Later, the BNP men vandalised 10-12 vehicles and set fire to 10/12 others, disrupting vehicular movement on Dhaka-Chittagong highway.

 

The unruly opposition activists also vandalized 40 vehicles and put up blockade at Fauzdarhat, Barabkundu, Kumira, Botola and Banubazar, creating a long tailback on the busy highway.

 

Vehicular movement on the highway did not return to normalcy till filing of this report around 7 pm.

 

Jahurul Alam, joint secretary of the Sitakunda upzila unit BNP, blamed police for the clash. He claimed that their 15-20 activists sustained bullet wound during the clash.

 

Addition police super (North) Md Shahidullah said they have been trying to bring the situation under control. Four policemen were injured in the attack by the BNP men, he said.
