It exposes govt’s politics of vengeance, says BNP
Plainclothes police arrested BNP joint secretary general Barrister Mahbubuddin Khokon, MP near Matsya Bhaban in the capital on Thursday.
Deputy Commissioner (Public Relations) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Masudur Rahman said police arrested Khokon around 4:25 pm, but did not elaborate the reason behind the BNP MP’s arrest.
Barely an hour before his arrest, Khokon, also the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) secretary, had appeared before a High Court bench during hearing on bail pleas of top five BNP leaders, including Barrister Moudud Ahmed, MK Anwar and Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah, in two cases.
Khokon is the second BNP MP arrested after opposition leader Khaleda Zia announced ‘March for Democracy’ towards the capital for December 29.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Khaleda declared the programme calling upon people from all walks of life to march towards Dhaka carrying the national flag to press home their demands for having an election under non-party neutral administration.
Earlier on Wednesday, Law enforcers detained BNP female MP Shammi Akhter, its former MP Sardar Shakhawat Hossain Bakul and several other opposition men from the city’s Gulshan area as the government apparently took a hard line following the announcement of the ‘March for Democracy’ programme scheduled to be held in front of BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.
The law enforcers arrested some other top leaders of BNP and its associate bodies, including Moudud Ahmed, MP, MK Anwar, MP, and Rafiqul Islam Miah, Abdul Awal Mintoo, Shimul Biswas, on various charges relating to street violence.
Meanwhile, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir strongly protested and denounced the arrest of Khokon.
In a statement, the BNP leader said the government keeps on implicating opposition leaders and activists in ‘false and fabricated’ cases and repressing and arresting them in a bid to give its desired one-party rule a permanent shape.
“The arrest of Mahbubuddin Khokon, MP, has again exposed the government’s politics of vengeance,” Fakhrul added.
He also demanded the government immediately releases Khokon unconditionally.
