The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Saturday urged the interim government chief adviser Muhammad Yunus to give a road map for national elections and necessary reforms.
Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made this call at a discussion meeting on the occasion of the ninth death anniversary of former prime minister Kazi Zafar Ahmed at the National Press Club organised by the Bhashani Anusari Parishad.
‘We have high expectations from the interim government. We all hope this government will hold a fair election within a reasonable time and the chief adviser will soon present to the public what he wants to do. We hope speedy elections will be arranged through a road map,’ Fakhrul said.
He further said that the interim government should discuss with the political parties as soon as possible to meet the needs of the people and arrangements must be made as to how an election can be expedited.
‘A new future has come before us today. All garbage should be removed and the country should be taken forward,’ he said, adding that the culprit bureaucrats of the Sheikh Hasina government were holding office at different departments stressing that students and people ensured Hasina’s fall should stay united to thwart counter revolutions.
He said that there is no alternative to reforming the country through an elected parliament.
‘We want to emphasise the importance of elections. Elections are a prerequisite for state reform. We do not believe that a few individuals will reform the state. This reform should be done through people’s participation,’ Fakhrul pointed out.
Saying that those who were in charge of the interim government were all qualified people, the BNP leader mentioned that the interim government had yet to hold any real agenda-based discussion with the political parties. The government should know the views of the political parties, he added.
Urging the party leaders and activists to stand by the flood victims, Fakhrul said that a number of people had already died in the flood in 10 districts, including Cumilla, Feni and Noakhali.
