Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Monday alleged that Tk 800 crore was stolen from Bangladesh Bank’s account in the US Federal Reserve Bank as the government did not take any strong action against public money plundering from the country’s banking sector.
BNP, which earlier demanded the resignation of finance minister AMA Muhith and Bangladesh Bank governor Atiur Rahman, now also wants the prime minister to quit together taking responsibility for the sensational heist.
BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi made the demand at a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, United News of Bangladesh reports.
He alleged that there was an evil effort to hush up the incident as the big fishes are behind it.
‘The central bank has now subjected to plundering as the government did not take any stern position against the looting of huge money from Basic Bank, Hall Mark, Bismillah Group, state banks and capital market. Why does the incident (BB account heist) come to light one month after it took place. It clearly manifests that there was an evil attempt to hide the incident,’ Rizvi said.
He further said, ‘I’m on behalf of BNP demand that the stolen money be recovered and those involved in it be punished. Bangladesh won’t get rid of such incidents through only the resignation of the finance minister and the governor. The resignation of the prime minister alongside the duo can ensure the liberty of the country, its people and democracy.’
