BNP defers Saturday’s rally

Party’s Deputy Office Secretary Abdul Latif Jony said their pre-planned agitation rallies would take place outside Dhaka.

“A decision has been taken to hold our programme at 3pm on Sunday due to the Ekushey Book Fair and the Biswa Ijtema,” he told bdnews24.com on Friday.

The BNP is yet to get police permission to hold the rally.

“We have sought permission from the police for the Suhrawaydy Udyan rally but are yet to get any reply,” he said.

Jony said they had informed the police of the development.

BNP chief Khaleda Zia had dubbed the 10th Parliament ‘illegal’ and called for a procession sporting black flag on Jan 29. The 10th Parliament’s maiden session was held on last Wednesday.

Party’s spokesperson Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir had called for Saturday’s rally protesting against alleged attack on the black flag procession. He had said the main rally would be held in Dhaka.

The BNP and its allies had boycotted the Jan 5 polls demanding a non-party government’s supervision in the national elections.

It resulted in a predictable landslide for the Awami League and its allies.

This year, the book fair has been extended to the Suhrawardy Udyan.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the book fair on the Bangla Academy premises on Saturday afternoon.
